Today the name "Kremlin" is used to describe the Russian authorities, whose headquarters are located in Moscow, however, the name Kremlin initially determined all the fortified complexes located on hills, where the most important offices, orthodox churches and other administrative or representative buildings were situated. Among the most important Russian kremlins there are Kazan, Smolensk and Novgorod Kremlins. The Moscow Kremlin was built on a triangular plan and it was the seat of princes and tsars for centuries, there were also a number of orthodox churches. Today the Kremlin is available for tourists and serves the function of a museum. When visiting the Kremlin it is worth seeing the towers and battlements, the 15th-century Cathedral of the Dormition of the Mother of God, the world's largest Tsarsky Kolokol bell and the Tsar cannon. The Grand Kremlin Palace is one of the most recognizable buildings of the Moscow Kremlin – it is an official residence of the president. It is interesting that the palace has three rows of windows, but only two floors. Right next to the Kremlin there is the legendary Cathedral of St. Basil.
