Saint Michael’s Mount (France) online puzzle
Saint Michael’s Mount Island, which is connected with the mainland only by a dam, is located in southwestern Normandy. In the ancient times the island was a place where gods of sun were worshipped – at first it was Celtic Belenus, then the Romans worshipped Mithra. The island owes its name to the legend, according to which, Archangel Michael appeared onto the bishop of nearby Avranches and asked him to build a chapel on the rocks. Then the island became the seat of the Benedictine abbey. The size of the La Merveille monastery (English: “miracle”) is impressive. It towers over the town and is perfectly visible from the mainland. The history of this medieval edifice is unusual too, as it was a prison for some time and then even a fortress. Tourists who visit this place have a chance to see spectacular sea tides. The breathtaking “monastery on water” inspired many artists: writers, composers and filmmakers.
