Sweden's capital, Stockholm, is a large city situated in the central part of the country. The city is spread across several islands and the mainland area at the mouth Lake Mälaren and the coast of the Baltic Sea. Due to its unique location, Stockholm is sometimes called the Venice of the North. The historic district of the city, which is called Gamla Stan, was founded in the 13th century on four islands. The Market, i.e. Stortorget, is its central point. Apart from the commercial district with charming houses with colorful facades, the Old Town is also the place where visitors may see the 14th-century Lutheran cathedral of St. Nicholas, Royal Palace, Royal Mail building and the narrowest street in the city.
