The building of the Greek Parliament used to serve the function of the Royal Palace in the past and was built for king Otton. The edifice was designed by Friedrich Gaertner, who took care of its antique look, as there are numerous references to Doric and Ionic orders. The Palace was completed in 1842 and then the royal family moved in. The reconstructed edifice has been the seat if the Greek Parliament since 1935. The Greek Evzoni in original dress uniforms keep the guard of honor by the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier that is situated nearby. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a relief built in the front wall of the Parliament, which depicts a moribund hoplite. The relief is surrounded by the fragments of Pericles’s funeral speech.
