Flaming Gore National Recreation Area is the area of protected landscape, located in the central part of the United States, on the Wyoming – Utah border. The area was given the name “Flaming Gorge” by John Wesley Powell during his 1869 expedition down the Green River and refers to breathtaking steep pink sandstone cliffs, which tower high over the surface of the river. The National Recreation Area covers the area around the artificial lake, which was created due to the construction of the dam across the Green River. Activities in the recreation area include camping, hiking, boating and fishing.
