The castle of Saint George located in the capital of Portugal is a monumental building from the 12th century. The fortress was erected by the Moors. Over the following centuries, the castle was repeatedly expanded and restored. The impressive fortifications suffered severely during the earthquake which struck Lisbon in 1755. In the 20th century, the castle situated on the top of the hill became one of the main tourist attractions of the city, mostly due to the stunning views from its walls. The building is also an important landmark on the map of the Alfama district of Lisbon.
