Baixa district (Portugal) online puzzle
Lisbon is the capital of Portugal. Baixa Pombalina, known also as the Lower Town, is considered to be the most beautiful part of the city. There are many architectonic objects of historic significance. The district was constructed in the second half of the 18th century, when the city was rebuilt after the large earthquake. The new buildings are the examples of earthquake-resistant constrictions. The old town is dominated by the 12th-century Castle of Saint George (Portuguese: Castelo de São Jorge), which was built by the Moors. In the castle there used to be the seat of the court, then barracks and prison. Today the picturesquely situated fortress is a popular tourist attraction as there are beautiful views of Lisbon from the hill.
