Madeira is a Portuguese island in the archipelago located in the Atlantic Ocean. The landscape of the island is dominated by mountainous and green areas and the name of the island most probably meant “Forested Island”. The climate here is warm and mild, thanks to which there are many kinds of plants with exotic fruits and colorful flowers. The city of Funchal, which is the capital of the island, is located on the southern coast of the island. Its name is also derived from a plant – fennel. The Funchal’s old town is the place where the Museum of Contemporary Art is located. It has its seat in the 17th-century fortress called Fortaleza de São Tiago. There is also the 16th-century chapel of Capela do Corpo Santo. Cristiano Ronaldo – the world famous football player – was born in Funchal.
