One of the most important buildingss of the Portuguese capital is the 16th-century Hieronymites Monastery, Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, located in the Belém neighborhood. The impressive edifice was erected by the order of King Manuel I of Portugal, in architectural terms it combines Gothic and Renaissance elements. In the era of great geographical discoveries, the monks occupying the monastery in Lisbon were supposed to, among other things, support sailors with their fervent prayers. In the vicinity of the monastery there is also a street the name of which refers to the Order of Saint Jerome or Hieronymites, which provided residents of Lisbon with spiritual support until the 19th century.
