Tours is the capital of the Indre-et-Loire department in the Centre region located in the central part of France. The city lies in the valley of the Loire River and a stone bridge called Le Pont Wilson dating from the eighteenth century is one of its most important monuments. Apart from the bridge there is a Gothic cathedral of Saint Gatien. A historic fifteen-arch bridge replaced the destroyed Eudes bridge and until today it spans the northern part of the city and its center. The bridge was named in honor of US President Woodrow Wilson in 1918. It was destroyed during World War II, several arches collapsed also in 1978. Currently, the reconstructed bridge is open to traffic, including trams.
