Estaing is considered one of the most picturesque villages in France. It was founded in the Middle Ages by the noble family of Rouergue and to this day has retained its former atmosphere of a sleepy village lost among the mountains. A well-known pilgrimage route of St. James, leading to Santiago de Compostela goes through the village. Formerly, the pilgrims who traveled using the route often chose Estaing as a place of rest, because the local authorities did not charge any fees. In addition, the area was considered relatively safe, free of robbers attacking travelers. To this day, the residents of the village organize a festival to honor of pilgrims every July.
