Bamberg is an over-thousand-year old town, which has imperial and bishopric traditions. It was built by Henry II as the seat of the newly created bishopric of Bavaria. From the beginning of its existence the town of Bamberg was supposed to be a representative one. Following the example of Rome, it was built on seven hill and five sacred buildings arranged in the shape of a Latin cross were the basis of the town’s development. As an important center in the region, Bamber is a town with abundant monuments of monumental architecture, both religious and secular, and three of its historic districts are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
