The walls of Palamidi fortress in Nafplio (Greece) online puzzle
Palamidi is an impressive fortress located on a rocky hill towering over the town of Nafplio in the south of Greece. The fortified castle was built between 1686-1715 by the Venetians, who at that time seized the town for the second time. Their first occupation of Nafplio ended with the capture of the town by the Turks, therefore, in order to avoid re-defeat the Venetian leaders decided to erect a defensive structure, which was meant to protect the town from land and sea. Nafplion was then a major trading center and its loss would threaten the Venetian business in the region. Despite the undeniable defensive qualities of Palamidi fortress, the town was taken over by the Greeks in 1822 and was the first capital of independent Greece.
