Gotland is a Swedish island located in the Baltic Sea. Visby is its largest town and also the capital of the province of Gotland. The town developed in the Middle Ages being an active player in the Baltic trade, and it has retained its former atmosphere to this day. Historic churches, 3.5-kilometer defensive walls encircling the old town, narrow streets, ivy-covered fences and charming alleys full of blooming roses give the impression that time has stopped here. In summer Visby hosts the Medieval Week – Medeltidsveckan – during which tournaments, artistic performances and fairs are organized, whereas the cobbled streets of the town are full of the festival participants dressed in the costumes from that era.
