Defensive walls are among the most famous historic monuments of biggest town on the Swedish island of Gotland. Thanks to them the Old Town of Visby preserved the atmosphere of an old Hanseatic settlement. The walls are crowned with forty-four towers, towering over the ancient stone buildings and narrow streets. It is best to visit them on foot or cycling. The town has a rich history. Since the 10th century it was an important center of maritime trade, but it was also invaded by the Danes, Teutonic Knights, as well as the pirates known as the Victual Brothers. Today Visby located on the Baltic Sea is a popular holiday destination.
