The town of Flores lies in the northern part of Guatemala. Its historical part is located on an island on Lake Petén Itzá. The settlement is connected to the mainland, where the towns of Santa Elena and San Benito are located, by a narrow causeway. In the past Flores was inhabited by the Mayans. Today narrow stone streets with the colorful colonial houses are frequented tourists and travelers hungry for contact with the authentic Mayan culture. Near Flores there is the town of Tikál with ruins of medieval temples in the shape of pyramids.
