Ancient town of Matera (Italy) online puzzle
Matera is located in southern Italy and does not belong to the most popular tourist destinations of the Italian peninsula, which is very surprising given its uniqueness. The town was founded around the gorge that had been carved in soft limestone by the current of the river and one of the oldest in the world, as due to the multitude of caves and interconnecting passages and corridors was a perfect place to live since the Stone Age. The ancient town of Matera, called Sassi, includes unique homes built in natural caves or those dug by men, in which even the 1950s Italian peasants lived. Former residents of Matera raised also more than a hundred churches the interiors of which are carved in rocks, whereas their façades were added on the outside, which makes them unique in the world. This unique ancient town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
