Salamanca is a city located in the eastern part of the country on the River Tormes. The city has a very long history, dating back to the pre-Roman times, when the Celts founded a defensive fortress there. In the 3rd century BC Salamanca came under the rule of the Romans, who built the oldest monuments in the city. Nevertheless, the most important moment in the history of this city is the establishment of a university, which took place in the 13thcentury. Since then, the University of Salamanca has been one of the most important in Europe. It is willingly visited by the exchange students from other countries, not just European ones. The university offers the highest level of education in the fields of humanities, economics and modern Languages.
