Salzburg - literally "salt castle" - this is an Austrian city on the Salzach River, near the border with Germany. St. Peter’s Abbey is the landmark of Salzburg. It was founded in 696 by St. Rupert, the first bishop of Salzburg, and today it hosts the oldest library in Austria. The city is dominated by the Hohensalzburg Castle, picturesquely located on one of the green hills surrounding Salzburg. The historic city center has been listed as the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born In Salzburg. Visitors may admire the statue of the famous composer at Mozart Square. One of the bridges that can be found in the city was also named in honor of Mozart (Mozartsteg).
