South Holland with the capital in The Hague is one of the provinces in the Netherlands. It is located on the North Sea. Nevertheless, Rotterdam situated in the delta of the rivers Rhine and Meuse is the largest city of the province. Rotterdam obtained the municipal rights at the end of the 13th century. Its countrywide and international significance was growing along with the construction of the port and the development of shipbuilding industry. Today the port in Rotterdam is the largest in Europe: it covers the area of 40 km2 and handles trans-shipment, oil and container terminals and it participates in the international trade of various goods. The port part of the city is called Waterstadt. Apart from the historic harbor and several churches, Rotterdam is the city in which not many historic monuments survived. It is due to the bombing in 1940 (Rotterdam Blitz), in which the Luftwaffe almost completely destroyed the center of the city.
