New York is the city is the state of New York in the USA, the largest in terms of inhabitants in the country (11 million people). It is commonly called "The City That Never Sleeps" and "The Big Apple". New York is located on the east coast of the USA, at the mouth of the Hudson and East Rivers to the New York Harbour. The city is the world’s financial, advertising and media centre - in its centre there are many institutions, among other the main headquarter of the United Nations. New York was established by the Dutch in 1614 on the Manhattan island as a trading-post (at that time it was called New Amsterdam). It was granted the city rights in 1653. In 1664 the city was captured by the English and was renamed into New York. In 1785-90 it was the capital of the USA authorities.
