Hamburg is a city located in northern Germany on the river Elbe and it is an important commercial and industrial center. There is the largest German sea port, which has been a significant cargo hub since the Middle Ages. It is considered a sea port due to its ability to handle large ocean-going vessels. Thanks to the Hamburg Port the city is called “the Gate to the World”. Landungsbrücken (English: St. Pauli Landing Stages) with an old tunnel under the river Elbe and the vibrant Fish Market are the biggest tourist attractions of the port’s neighborhood. Near the port there is also the Speicherstadt (English: Warehouse district), where visitors may sea Gothic warehouses, and the modern HafenCity quarter.
