Basilica of Our Lady from Mount Carmel is situated in the city of Recife, the port city in the north-east of Brazil. The temple was built in 1767, however, its construction had begun almost a hundred years earlier. It is a part of the complex of buildings connected with the Carmelite convent that has been functioning in Recife since 1654. The basilica was built in Rococo style, with characteristic rich, dainty ornamentation. There are twelve side altars inside and the presbytery with the natural-size painting depicting Our Lady from Mount Carmel. Gold ornamentation of the altars belong to the most precious monuments of Rococo. There were several renovations in the 19th and 20th centuries and they changed the original decoration of the interior, however, the recent restoration work has re-established the former glamour of the church.
