Maggiore is the glacial lake located at the border of Italy and Switzerland. The town of Locarno, where the International Film Festival takes place every year, is located on the northern tip of Lake Maggiore, in the Swiss canton of Ticino. The town attracts tourists with beautiful views, warm Mediterranean climate and blooming camellias. Locarno may also pride on numerous historic monuments, which partially come from the period when it belonged to the Italian city of Milan. Chiesa Madonna del Sasso – the pilgrimage church built in the 16th century, situated in the upper part of the town – has become one of the town’s showpieces. The sanctuary situated on the mountain slope, from which there is a view on the lake, is visited by large numbers of pilgrims from all over the world.
