Upper Svanetia is one of the most beautiful regions of Georgia. The highland in the north of the country is inhabited by the Svan ethnic group, who have lived in isolation for centuries and retained a distinct language, customs and traditions. The landscape of Svanetia is characterized by medieval towers, erected mainly between the 9th and 12th centuries. The towers were built mainly because of the custom of bloody revenge in the past, which led to prolonged wars between conflicted families. The towers provided security, allowing inhabitants to observe the area and, if necessary, hide inside. Due to the uniqueness of the Svan culture and the natural beauty of the region, Svanetia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
