The island of Virgin Gorda, one of the British Virgin Islands, is located in the Caribbean Sea and covers an area of 21 square kilometers. The island owes its name, meaning literally Fat Virgin, to Christopher Columbus. The most important town on Virgin Gorda is Spanish Town, where the majority of the island’s population live. The Baths, i.e. piles of granite stones of different sizes, is a tourist attraction of Virgin Gorda. The rock formations are known for natural basins, pools and picturesque caves. On the island there are also the ruins of the nineteenth-century copper mine and a comfortable marina for sailors.
