Highlands are the mountainous region in north-west of Scotland. Inverness – the city inhabited by approximately sixty thousand people – is considered to be the capital of the region. The reconstructed castle of Shakespearean Macbeth – one of the most famous literary characters, is located there. The region is one of the least-populated in Europe. The region of Highlands is dotted with lakes and green hills, which makes it famous for picturesque landscapes. In the past it was inhabited by the Celtic peoples. Until the first half of 19th century it was also famous for illegal production of whiskey – the traditional Scottish drink.
