The environment of all atmospheric phenomena that are observed on Earth is the atmosphere itself – that is air, a gas layer of a definite composition that surrounds the Earth. Chemical compounds that make up air are responsible for the blue color of the sky. During sunrises and sunsets, that is when the sun comes out of the horizon or sets behind it, the sky becomes yellow and red. It happens because the light waves that are sent by the sun have a longer distance to travel – before the waves that are shorter (blue and purple) arrive to the observer on the Earth, they diffuse and our eyes see only the long waves – yellow and red.
