Summer stop no. 13 - POZNAŃ online puzzle
We are in the market square in front of the town hall and admire the Proserpina fountain.
There used to be 4 fountains-wells on the market square: Apollo, Mars, Neptune and Jupiter. In the mid-nineteenth century, Poznań treated itself to waterworks and... kicked out old, historic, rubbish fountains from the beginning of the 17th century !! A few years ago, they figured out it was a mistake and ordered copies of these fountains.
This one fountain is old and almost original - it is Jupiter rebuilt in 1758-66 according to the design of Augustyn Schöps. As a curiosity, I will add a small fact that the fountain was demolished by Lech fans, in an act of joyful frenzy, when their pets won the Polish champion (May 15, 2010). Fortunately, they redeemed themselves by collecting money for its renovation.
Proserpina, or the Roman equivalent of the Greek Persephone, is kidnapped for the winter six months to the underground kingdom of Pluto (Greek Hades) to return to the surface of the earth in spring and give us spring.
