The city of Cannes is located in the French region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur. Cannes used to be a typical agricultural and fishing town, however, it began to develop its tourist potential in the 19th century, when the representatives of the European aristocracy began to build here their summer residences. Since 1946 the resort has held the prestigious International Film Festival, during which the Golden Palm is awarded. When visiting Cannes tourists should see the bustling Promenade de la Croisette, the old town with traditional buildings (Le Suquet) and the medieval Chateau-Musée de la Castre, the castle that is situated on top of a hill.
