Carcassonne is a town located in Languedoc in southern France. Its inhabitants cultivate vines or find employment in the rubber and textile industries. The medieval complex of fortifications located on the right bank of the river Aude is the biggest attraction of the town. The town is surrounded by a double ring of ramparts and 53 towers and among its best-known edifices there are the twelfth-century castle and the Basilica of St. Nazaire. Today the Carcassonne fortress has the status of a historical monument and is often visited by tourists who come to the town for numerous festivals and tournaments.
