Hieronymites Monastery in Santa Maria de Belém (Portugal) online puzzle
The Lisbon Hieronymites Monastery is located in the Santa Maria de Belém district, at the mouth of the Tagus River to the Atlantic Ocean. The monastery was built in the 16th century in the Manueline style, combining Gothic and Renaissance architectural elements. Its construction – as thanksgiving after Vasco da Gama's trip to India – was commissioned by King Manuel I. The monarch, as well as his wife Maria of Aragon, were buried in the monastery, which until the 1930s was the seat of the Order of St Jerome. Since 1983, the impressive monastery has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
