Balaklava is located on the southern coast of the Crimean peninsula. It was a town in its own right until 1957, today it is one of the parts of Sevastopol. From the 1950s, Balaklava was a strategically important place for the authorities of the USSR. A modern military base, port for submarines and nuclear shelters were built. After the collapse of the USSR Balaklava was demilitarized and the whole arsenal transported to Russia. The town is now a seaside resort, which is very popular among the wealthy people. The former military base facilities have been made available to tourist.
