Almaty is a city in the south-eastern part of Kazakhstan, located near the border with Kyrgyzstan. Until 1997 it was the capital of the country. To this day, it remains the most important industrial, cultural and scientific center of Kazakhstan. Almaty is a young city – it was founded in the 19th century by the fortress Zailijskie on the Silk Road. The city is very modern and owes its wealth to oil. However, it pays a fairly high price for its wealth in the form of air pollution and problems with the oil industry waste disposal. In addition, it is located in the area that is seismically active, which was one of the reasons for the transferring of the capital to Astana in the central part of the country.
