Lyon is the third largest city in France, it is a large transport hub as well as the center of culture, science and finance. The city was founded by the Romans in the first century BC. Croix-Rousse is one of the most important districts of the city, it is located on a hill, from which magnificent views of the other parts of the city may be admired. From the sixteenth to the nineteenth century the district was inhabited mostly by weavers – it had an impact on its characteristic buildings, which is dominated by high structures. The buildings had to be suitable for large machines that form the basis of a loom. Currently, there are realistic murals painted on the facades of some houses. Croix-Rousse district is located between the two rivers – Rhone and Saône.
