The city-state of Singapore is located in the southern part of the Malay Peninsula. Since 1926 the land had belonged to Great Britain and it gained autonomy in 1959. Singapore is located on the Straits of Singapore, the Strait of Malacca is situated nearby – both of them connect the Andaman Sea to the South China Sea. The Asian city-state is now a powerful financial and commercial center. Downtown Singapore is characterized by narrow buildings, which is dominated by very high, modern residential and office buildings. Skyscrapers began to appear here in the 1970s but the expansion of the business part of the city continues to this day. In Singapore there are many buildings higher than 200 meters – the most famous ones include Republic Plaza, UOB Plaza One, OUB Centre and Capital Tower. Marina Bay Sands is the most impressive construction that has been erected here within the recent years.
