The city of Luxembourg is the capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. It is the seat of the government and parliament as well as the residence of the Grand Duke. The city is also the economic, financial and cultural center of the country. What is more, Luxembourg is the seat of several institutions of the European Union. The history of the city dates back to the Roman times, however, the year 963 is considered to be the date of the city’s foundation, when count Siegfried I built here a new castle, surrounded by a number of settlements. Among the most interesting historic monuments of Luxembourg are the medieval city walls, Neumuenster Abbey, the Grand Ducal Palace and numerous churches and cathedrals. The buildings constructed in the Gothic style have characteristic pointed roofs and arches. It is also worth visiting the newer part of the city, which was built in the 19thcentury.
