Budapest is the capital and the largest city of Hungary. It is located on the Danube river in the northern part of the country. The city is also the cultural and scientific center of European significance. The Royal Castle is situated on the right bank of the river, between Elisabeth Bridge and Széchenyi Chain Bridge. It is the complex of palace buildings and one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This impressive building is situated on the Castle Hill in Buda, in the western part of Budapest. First fortifications in this place were built as early as in the 13th century, it was only later when the site was used as the royal residence. Between the 14th and 20th centuries the castle was rebuilt and restored many times. The former royal residence still impresses visitors with its size and majestic form as well as the dome that towers over the castle complex.
