Ruins in the Mayan city of Tikal (Guatemala) online puzzle
Tikal is an ancient Mayan city located in the north of Guatemala. It was established in the 3rd century BC and most probably served the function of the Maya state capital. The ruins of the city were discovered by the Spanish missionaries towards the 17th century. It is the largest Guatemala’s complex of archeological monuments. The high and burly step pyramids are the most important buildings of the city and on their tops there were temples in which the most important Mesoamerican gods were worshipped. There are steep stairs with narrow steps leading to the temples. The temples were connected with other buildings by the system of procession routes converging in the center of the city, by the Great Square. Tourists visiting Tikal may admire mysterious ruins as well as wild nature, as the area is protected within the boundaries of the national park.
