Tikal is an ancient city located in what is now Guatemala. It was founded in the 3rd century AD and probably it was the capital of the Mayan state, which is evidenced by the monumental buildings connected by a network of wide roads. The focal point of the town is a large square, on which the daily lives of Tikal inhabitants took place. The square is surrounded by temples, which were the most important buildings of the city. During holiday days the whole community gathered on the Great Plaza in order to watch public ceremonies and celebrate religious rituals. Today the ruins of the city attract thousands of tourists and enthrall by their mysterious beauty.
