The building of Parliament in Budapest is one of the oldest and best known state buildings in Europe, it is also the symbol of the Hungarian capital. The edifice was built after the merger of two cities – Buda and Pest – into the city of Budapest. The city’s councilors decided that the city needs a new residence for the authorities. The construction began in 1885 and was finished 21 years later. The Parliament Building impresses visitors – it is a large neo-gothic building richly ornamented with elements referring to the Baroque style. Over a thousand people worked at the construction site, 40 kg of gold was used and half a million of gemstones. The edifice seems to manifest the power and majesty of the Hungarian state authorities.
