Ermoupoli on the island of Siros (Greece) online puzzle
Ermoupoli (or Hermoupolis, i.e. the “city of Hermes”) is the biggest town on the island of Siros in the Ciclades Archipelago on the Aegean Sea. The town was founded during the anti-Turkish uprising in the 1820’s. It quickly became a trade and industrial center of the region and the most important Greek port. Thousands of ships were built in the local shipyards and various goods were transshipped in the port. Today Ermoupoli is the biggest town of the island of Siros and the capital of the administration region known as the South Aegean. It is also a well-known tourist destination. The town is picturesquely located on the hillside with neo-classicist villas and traditional Greek houses. Tourists may walk along narrow streets with a large number of restaurants and cafes. The town’s architecture is dominated by public utility buildings and churches. The most characteristic is the Cathedral of St. Nicolas with a beautiful blue cupola.
