Cappadocia is a historical region situated in Turkey. It is primarily known for its distinctive landscape, which consists of fantastic rock formations in warm shades of yellow and pink. These unusual rocks were formed from fossilized ash ejected 3 million years ago by the surrounding volcanoes. This material is quite soft and therefore it easily erodes. Due to the softness of the local rocks, people carved homes in them as well as churches and monasteries, which were created by Christians who sought refuge from the Roman, and later Islamic persecution.
