La Boqueria is a huge market located in La Rambla street in Barcelona. It is not only the biggest but also the oldest market in the city. The first written records concerning the market date back to the 13th century, when only meat and its products were sold there. La Boqueria used to be only a secondary market, not registered in the official books of the magistrate. For centuries, the role of the market was limited only to relieving the major shopping squares of the city, nevertheless, its role began to increase in the 19th century. Then the city authorities made a decision to build a new larger market hall. Today meat is not the only product that is sold here, but also fish, seafood, vegetables, fruits, spices and various other products.
