Peneda- Gerês is the only national park in Portugal. It is located in the north-west part of Portugal and is a part of a larger protected area - Gerês-Xurés biosphere reserve, which is located both in Portugal and Spain. Peneda-Gerês National Park was created in 1971 as a result of the interest of scientists from around the world in the local flora, fauna and landscape. On its territory there are many species of plants and animals that cannot be seen anywhere else in the world. They have become the subject of numerous scientific studies the significance of which cannot be overestimated. The park is also very attractive in terms of landscape – apart from mountains and forests, there are also beautiful lakes, rivers and waterfalls. The abundance of water is one of the characteristics of this park, as beautiful streams and ponds adorn the slopes of each local mountain.
