People have been fascinated by cats for centuries. These beautiful and independent animals have been also considered to have some magical powers. In various cultures cats are also considered either to be cursed or holy creatures. In Europe cats were attributed to bad intentions and they were accused of dealing with the devil. For that reason the cat is depicted as a constant companion of witches in the collective imagination. Cats were perceived quite differently in Asia, where they symbolized happiness. Cat figurines with a paw raised in an inviting gesture, which are called Maneki-neko, have been popular until this very day. They are placed by the entrance to the shops, offices and services. It is believed in Japan, China and Thailand that a cat will bring luck in business and attract customers, as it provides them with a sense of security.
