The Amazon River, the longest river in the world, is located in South America. It flows through Peru, Brazil and Argentina. The source of the river is situated in the Peruvian Andes and it flows parallel to the equator creating an important communication route. There are still ongoing disputes concerning the determination of the main source of the river, therefore its exact length is not known. The mouth of the Amazon, where it flows into the Atlantic Ocean, reaches the width of three hundred kilometers. Its numerous tributaries and basins are characterized by an impressive size as well, making the Amazon River a true queen of rivers. A region known as Amazonia is located in the basin of the river. It is occupied by rainforests that are precious for the entire ecosystem of our planet.
