Cups arrived to Europe from China together with the tradition of tea making. At first, this aromatic brew was served in small bowls without any handles, which imitated their Asian prototype. In the course of time the European version of a cup was enhanced and a handle was added. What is more, a small saucer was introduced in order to prevent from spilling liquid onto a tablecloth or clothes. The first European cups were made of high quality china and only the wealthiest people could afford to buy them. As soon as the cheaper imitation of china know as faience was spread around, tea tableware became much more available. Due to their elegance and beautiful forms cups have become objects in which collectors are interested in as they perceive them as small masterpieces.
