The Royal Castle in Windsor (Berkshire county in England) has been the residence of the English kings since 1110. The castle, erected in 1070-1086 by William the Conqueror, and then extended many times, consists of many buildings surrounded by gates and towers. The castle is 800 m long and it has got 19 towers; the area of its floors equals about 45 000 square meters. In 1992 part of the castle was burnt - the building was reopened for visiting in 1997. At present the Windsor Castle is - together with the Buckingham Palace in London and the Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh - one of the main official residences of Queen Elisabeth II (it is here where the famous Order of the Garter is granted) and it is also the largest inhabited castle in the world.
