Aegina lies in the archipelago of the Saronic Islands in the Aegean Sea. According to legend, the island owes its name to Aegina – a well-known mythological nymph, who was abducted by Zeus and later gave birth to Aeacus – the first king of the island. There is a long, sandy beach in a small town of Agia Marina located on the island. Green pines, clean and shallow water of a rocky bay, where small boats are moored, as well as taverns offering local specialties, attract crowds of tourists, among whom there are families with children, including the residents of Athens. The easiest way to reach the island is by ferry or hydrofoil.
